The new Ferrari 458 Spider incorporates an extraordinary number of truly avant-garde technical solutions. Many of these are related to the chassis, whose weight and rigidity have been meticulously optimized. New light alloys, new types of welding and fusions have been introduced. Comfort has been increased significantly thanks to the multi-link rear suspension and the double front wishbones, which makes the car rigid but do not compromise the quality of the experience inside. The car’s behavior obviously changes depending on the position of the manettino on the steering wheel. However, compared to the 458 Italia, the “sport” and “race” positions have a configuration that is more about handling and the pleasure of driving than extreme performance on the track.

The 4499 cc V8, winner of the Engine Technology International 2010 Best Performance Engine Award, produces 570 horsepower and can rev to an incredible 9,000 rpm. It has double-phase direct injection and a variable geometry exhaust system; its emissions are half those of the recent 360 Modena, a reduction that further improves if the client chooses the engine fitted with the stop & start system, complemented by a series of devices to further reduce fuel consumption. The Spider uses the 458′s remarkable seven-speed, electro-hydraulic, dual-shift gearbox allowing incredibly quick gear changes.
